OPEN DANCE NIGHT INFORMATION FOR DANCERS

WHAT IS OPEN DANCE NIGHT?

Open Dance night is a lot of fun and a great opportunity for advanced students and aspiring professional belly dancers to gain experience performing in an authentic professional restaurant venue.

These events are held in local restaurants that specialize in ethnic cuisine and atmosphere.

Similar to the concept of karaoke, this is an unpaid event, but can provide valuable performance experience for aspiring dancers.

Requirements vary with each restaurant and are determined by the restaurant managment. At the request of restaurant management, it is important that the music, performance and costuming reflect and honor the culture and atmosphere of the host restaurant.

In order to assure that the performances promote the atmosphere the restaurant provides for all of its customers, dancers participating in open dance night must have attained an advanced skill level and wear tasteful costuming suitable for the restaurant venue.

Open dance night is coordinated by a host dancer who determines the theme, music and line up for the night. If you are interested in performing, contact the host coordinator for information and to sign up. Dancers should plan to contact the host coordinator no later than the Sunday before the event.

The show generally runs about 45 minutes to an hour. Depending on the number of dancers, each dancer will have the opportunity to do two dances. The host coordinator will be happy to answer any questions about music and costuming you may have.

Depending on the venue, dancers may be expected to purchase food or beverage. Dancers are asked to remind their friends who come to watch the show that they should plan to order food.

PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES

How dancers present ourselves to the public before, during and after a show is critical to upholding the dignity and beauty of Middle Eastern dance.

Dancers should always wear an an appropriate costume cover when not performing. Once the show is over, dancers should change into street
clothes before leaving or staying to dine in the restaurant. It is NOT appropriate to remain in costume once a show is over.

Costuming, dance and music should always reflect and honor the audience, culture and venue of performance.

Certain styles and types of costuming, dance and music that are appropriate for fairs and festivals are not appropriate for the restaurant venue.

While artistic in their own right, in general, heavy metal, hip hop, fusion and certain types of tribal style are generally not favored by restaurants.
